Some consider the 1990s the worst decade for fashion; a loose, occasionally tattered look that started off with garish neon and finished with large logos splashed over everything. However, looking back on the decade, formal or dress wear isn’t particularly memorable, so what we’re left with is an evolving streetwear look – one that essentially faded when Limp Bizkit fell off the music charts in the early 2000s but re-emerged this year through a cadre of streetwear brands. U.K. retailer The Goodhood Store is the latest to catch on, and out of all autumn/winter lookbooks we’ve seen, their ‘Them Bones’ collection remains the most faithful to the aesthetic. The black and white images curate a select group of brands carried by the retailer, including NEIGHBORHOOD, Norse Projects and Junya Watanabe. Regardless of designer, layering, flannel checks, loose cuts and shirts tied around the waist create a continuous theme and help tie the lookbook together. Out of all possible pop culture influences from the decade, grunge is the most prominent: flannel checks, patterned jackets on top of t-shirts, graphic shirts, t-shirts layered over contrasting long-sleeve tops and roomy trousers hint at a style appropriate for a rock music video from the decade’s first half. Yet Goodhood modernises the image slightly; although checks and wide horizontal stripes remain, they’re occasionally replaced with polka dots or a Hawaiian shirt-esque patterns. Workwear, to a lesser extent, had an influence nearly twenty years ago, and here, Goodhood revives it via worn, almost-bleached denim, faded button-down shirts and footwear reminiscent of work boots. It’s safe to say that as streetwear brands continue to pick and choose certain quintessential elements from 1990s style – a bit a grunge, some hip-hop influences or a propensity for large graphics – The Goodhood Store goes along with the trend and stays accurate to the period with their latest, on point selection.
